Here Is Elsewhere
Since 2021 I have photographed the Deûle canal at night, around the island of Bois-Blancs in Lille, mostly from a kayak.
The outings begin late and often end at first light. The pictures are made with a phone, hand-held, in night mode. Exposures last several seconds while the boat drifts, so the water, the lights and the edges of things move with it.
At that hour the canal stops resembling a place. Warehouses become flat shapes, façades double in the water, a bridge holds two figures against the dawn. The series gathers those moments.
